Art, biophilia and environmental commitment: promoting community resilience and pro-environmental behaviors by Koncha Pinos

This article explores the relationship between art and emotional well-being through the project “Biophilia and Art: Jungles and Forests”, a pictorial work made by Duván López. The research assesses how an art exhibition influences the levels of eco-anxiety and solastalgia, as well as the emotional resonance between the artist’s creative state and the audience’s experience. The proposal includes two modalities of participation: a virtual exhibition, which is accessed by 200 participants from all over the world (aged 14-74); and a face-to-face exhibition, in Catalonia, also with 200 participants (12-70 years old). The study measures the levels of echoanxiety and solastalgia before and after the visit (in both modalities) and evaluates changes in vocal prosody. In addition, initial and final photographs of the participants are incorporated for subsequent analysis with Artificial Intelligence, in order to record changes in facial expression and other non-verbal features. It is also planned to analyze the most repeated words and generate prosody maps that relate what is said (and what is omitted) with vocal and emotional patterns. Finally, participants are asked to make a drawing that represents their emotional and sensory experience. As well as choosing from 30 colored cards, which is the color that best represents your experience and why. The project seeks not only to improve the understanding of biophilia and its effect on emotional health, but also to promote a greater commitment to sustainability and the preservation of nature.

Description

Biophilia and Art is a project that combines science, art and nature to explore the connection between human beings and their natural environment. Led by Koncha Pinós, an expert in neuroaesthetics, and based on the work of Colombian artist Duván López, this research focuses on the emotional and psychological impact of the exhibition Selvas y Bosques, designed to reduce eco-anxiety and solastalgia in children, adolescents and adults. The exhibition combines visual elements and soundscapes inspired by the Colombian jungles, inviting participants to reconnect with nature from an emotional and sensory perspective. In addition, it integrates a pioneering analysis that connects the experience of the artist during the creation with that of the visitors when interacting with the work.

Research Questions

The research raises key questions:

  1. Emotional Impact: ¿How does the artistic exhibition affect the levels of echo anxiety and solastalgia before and after the visit?
  2. Artist-Visitor Connection: ¿How much does the visitor connect with the artist’s initial emotional state during the creative process?
  3. Experience Modalities: ¿What are the differences between the face-to-face and the virtual experience in terms of emotional impact and connection with the work?
  4. Sensitive Elements: ¿How do visual and sound stimuli contribute to generating a state of calm, introspection and hope?
  5. Measurable Transformations: ¿What changes are observed in the prosody of the visitors’ voice, and how do they relate to the vocal patterns recorded by the artist during the creation?
  1. Measurement of the Artist’s Prosody: During Duván López’s creative process, the emotional nuances in his vocal tone and rhythm were recorded, establishing a basis to analyze how his initial emotional state could resonate with visitors.
  2. Pre and Post-Visit Evaluation: Participants complete surveys and their vocal prosody is analyzed before and after the experience to identify emotional changes and levels of connection with the work.
  3. Face-to-face and Virtual or Face-to-face experience: Direct interaction with the works in a space designed to recreate the atmosphere of the jungles or Virtual: Remote access to an immersive digital exhibition with visual and sound elements.
  • Reconnection with Nature: Reduce eco-anxiety and solastalgia through artistic experiences that evoke serenity and hope.
  • Artistic Connection: Explore how the artist’s emotional states during creation can resonate with visitors, generating a significant emotional connection.
  • Accessibility and Inclusion: Evaluate how virtual and face-to-face modalities can be adapted to various social and cultural contexts.
  • Sustainability: Inspire participants to develop a more conscious relationship with ecosystems and to adopt more sustainable attitudes.

Under the scientific direction of Koncha Pinós and with the artistic vision of Duván López, Biofilia y Arte: Selvas y Bosques not only evaluates the impact of art on emotional health, but also delves into the relationship between the artist’s creative process and the public’s experience. This unique approach unites art, science and sustainability, demonstrating how art can act as a bridge between the individual and nature at a critical moment for the planet.
