25 y 26 de Noviembre 2026. Gaudí and Mediterranean Biophilia: Sensoperception and Purpose-Making at Casa Batlló. By Koncha Pinos.

Abstract
This paper presents an empirical study on sensoperception and meaning-making in visitors experiencing the architecture of Antoni Gaudí, focusing on Casa Batlló as a case of Mediterranean biophilic design. The research aims to investigate how Gaudí’s architectural language influences perceptual processes, emotional regulation, and reflections on life purpose among first-time visitors from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Using a pre- and post-experience design, the study analyzes responses from participants representing 30 nationalities and 16 languages. The methodology combines observational data, self-reported measures, and qualitative narrative analysis. Sensoperception is defined as the dynamic integration of sensory input and cognitive interpretation within spatial experience.

Results indicate that exposure to Gaudí’s organic geometries, material textures, and spatial sequences produces measurable shifts in attention and emotional coherence. A significant proportion of participants reported moments of introspection and reorientation toward personal meaning, suggesting that these environments extend beyond conventional well-being outcomes. These effects appear independent of prior knowledge of Gaudí or Mediterranean culture, emerging directly from embodied spatial interaction.

The study concludes that Mediterranean biophilic design, as exemplified in Casa Batlló, can activate deeper cognitive and existential processes. It proposes sensoperception as a key dimension in urban design, highlighting the potential of architecture to foster well-being, purpose, and cultural connection in contemporary cities.
